I was in art school at the time. In my studio when a fellow classmate came in and asked if I heard about planes hitting the world trade center. I said, “Huh?” He said it again but I automatically assumed he meant some kind of terrorist attack across seas, even though I knew the WTC was in New York. I said, “Oh, you mean over there (I motioned as if I was talking about the middle east)”. He said, “No. American”.

Just then, the guy in the studio next to me look puzzled and got up and walked out. I was alone now and just continued with my work. It didn’t sink in. Then my instructor came in and said “Did you hear we’re under attack?” That was when I got nervous. All the students gathered in the main classroom and we listened to the radio. All I remember is hearing a reporter saying “Oh my God. Oh my God”.
