I woke up, turned on the news while making breakfast in my one-bedroom apartment in downtown Lafayette, IN. While I was still in the shower getting dressed, I heard (rather than saw) the shock in the voice of the CNN commentator when the first tower was hit. At first, like most people, I thought it was an aviation accident, and came out to watch the news. 15 minutes later, the second plane hit. I could not fathom what had just happened, but felt sick to my stomach. When I got to Lilly Hall (at Purdue), the TVs were on in the lobby. All of us in Biology, grad students, undergrads, faculty, staff, representing probably every nation on the planet, were just milling about. In unified horror, we watched two more attacks unfold that morning. Many of us came from countries and cities that were victims to terrorism. That day, we realized that even the US was not immune. I had just bought Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot that Saturday, and had it on loop. The lyrics were chillingly prescient. To this day, I get goosebumps when I listen to that album.

Soon both towers came down. We realized that terrorism was now not just what we see on the evening news. The sadness of loss of life increased 10 fold, then disbelief, confusion, anger, and fear.
