Mies Van derRohe + 9/11 + me

I was in NYC. Was going to go to the last day of the Mies Van der Rohe exhibit at the Met that day after doctor appt. I was walking Cheeba my chow chow down 6th Ave and 28th and saw the plane go overhead and down into the building with my then boyfriend. Thought it was an accident. Heard that the buildings were designed to withstand planes. We walked down to FIT and then people came out saying the Pentagon was struck too. Came home super confused still believing it was an accident. A little while later I went back out to get milk for coffee and the building fell down. Went to get paint masks and tried to assess. They called for evacuation of our street that night (we were close to subway and Empire State Building and both were getting bomb threats). My bestie Alex was now officially stuck in town from LA and we all hunkered down to try and get through it. He eventually left on a Greyhound bus home to LA. He worked for Giorgio Armani at the time and still couldn't get a flight out. Took a long time to get a sense of normalcy. I worked in advertising on the Hotwire account- which went on hiatus. Left NYC months later.
As America confronts these tragic circumstances, it is imperative that the situation is not compounded by expressions of religious or ethnic intolerance. The greatness of our nation rests on the exceptional diversity of religions, nationalities, and ethnic backgrounds which characterize its people.
