I had just got back from primary school (Britain is several hours ahead of NY so the news reached us in the early afternoon) and my mother took a phone call from my grandmother. She was very shocked and concerned, and when the call had ended she told me that there had been a terrorist attack and some aeroplanes had crashed into the Twin Towers in New York. I was six and didn't know where New York was or what the Twin Towers were, but over the next few days I began to realise the significance of what had happened. Having grown up in a world where that has happened and which is still dealing with the aftermath the memory of that day is a sobering reminder of why freedom shouldn't be taken for granted.
I tried searching all the news sites on the web, but it was impossible to connect to any. I spread the news through the office and we soon connected a television in one of the conference rooms. The site of the towers in flames was horrifying.
