Stunned and Speechless

I was in my executive manager's office, and we were talking about items for court. One of my co-workers came running in and told us to turn on the TV, there was a terrorist attack involving a plane. Sadly, the first thing we saw when the TV came on was the second plane approaching and crashing into the towers. We stood there, stunned and speechless as we tried to comprehend what was happening. Then the news report came on about a plane at the Pentagon, and then another story about a downed plane that was possibly planned for another attack. It was so much tragedy in rapid succession. I don't remember exactly what happened next, other than the sound of wailing coming from outside the office, somewhere down the hall. I never found out the source of that wailing, but the sound still haunts me today. I remember going back to my office and calling my husband, a federal worker, to make sure he was okay, and then calling my kids' schools to make sure they were okay. My entire office was glued to the news the entire day. It wasn't until later that night that the tears hit. I was fortunate to not know anyone personally that perished, but the horror and the sadness was overwhelming.
...in the aftermath, I attended an interfaith prayer meeting that left me in awe. And I know now that though there might be a few incidents no one is proud of, we have come a long way in the fight against bigotry.
