I was in a Catholic school and in the 5th grade. I am from Chicago. That day like any other usual day, the whole school had gotten back from church. In my class we had barely begun to start our math lesson and I asked my classmate for a sheet of paper. My teacher was interrupted by the morning announcement. The principle said that while were in church, the World Trade Center in New York had been hit by an airplane.
( At that time I didnt know much about New York. For my whole life I had always lived in Chicago)
We were told to have a moment of silence. During the moment of silence which felt like hours, instead of praying I kept thinking and asking myself.
“What is going on?”
“Why is this happening?”
“Why today?”
“Who would do such a thing?”
I thought America was a peaceful country.
I didnt understand any of it. All I knew is that alot of people have died.
Then we were interrupted by another announcement that the 2nd twin tower had been hit.
It was hard for all of us to concentrate on our math. So my teacher said we can watch the news. We saw the television and the recording of the Twin Towers being hit. People running away as the towers were collapsing. Then I heard they were blaming Osama Bin Laden.
My teacher turned the tv off. I wanted to hear more what the news had to say. We continued the day as usual.
After the events of 9/11/01, my class took a field trip to downtown to see an opera of Cinderalla. As we passed by the many buildings the Sears Tower was heavily guarded with security and cement barracades around it.
