I was four years old when the attacks occurred and living in Jersey City, directly across the river from the Twin Towers. I’d been to the Twin Tower’s observation deck only a few months prior. Tuesday morning was an average morning. I woke up early at 7:15am, had breakfast and watched some of my VHS children’s videos. Outside you could hear the loud explosion, I rushed to the window and saw the North Tower in flames, smoke starting to fill the sky. My parents were now outside looking on at the burning building. Neighbors also surrounded near the Hudson River. At 9:03 a plane was noticeably arriving in the distance flying so low. Living near New York, I wasn’t used to seeing low flying airplanes, they were normally way, way up in the sky. It appeared to turn slightly and then just slammed into the other tower. More smoke began to fill the sky. I didn’t know what was happening but everyone around me was in tears and running back to their homes. Soon we went back in our homes and eventually I noticed there was more smoke. The South Tower had collapsed, people were coming over to Jersey City by ferry at this point. About half an hour later, the second tower collapsed. I now understood despite my young age, people had been killed intentionally. That night I went to sleep without seeing the Twin Towers standing in the distance, which was my favorite sight from my window was seeing those huge towers standing tall over the New York skyline. Now I’m 16 and understand everything properly. Rest in peace to all those who perished in the attacks.
